The Places That Made Point Breeze Home

The Places That Made Point Breeze Home

For six years, Point Breeze was home to Sarah and her family. They were initially drawn to the neighborhood by the affordability and the chance to find a spacious, newly renovated home while still being close to so much of the city.

But what made them stay was the community.

“It's not really a neighborhood you visit if you're not seeing someone who lives there,” Sarah shared. “But when you do live there, it's a tight community and you get to know your neighbors.”

When her kids were little, much of their life in Point Breeze happened outside. Chew Playground and Wharton Square Park were regular stops, with Julian Abele Park just a quick walk away. The playgrounds were often filled with familiar friends and new ones waiting to be made.

Summer meant days at Chew Pool at 19th and Ellsworth. And throughout the year, Queen Memorial Library became its own kind of home away from home.

“My kids grew up knowing every inch of the children's section, reading, playing and crafting.”

That everyday rhythm is what Sarah remembers most. Breakfast at Tasty Toast or Two Eagles. A smoothie, sandwich, or forgotten grocery item from Hannah K. Breezy's Deli and Market. Drinks at Sardine Bar or Dock Street. Living, eating, and spending time at the parks.

“There aren't really shops,” she joked. “It's all about living, eating and hanging at parks.”

Eventually, Sarah's family outgrew their two-bedroom home. They considered staying in Point Breeze, but during the height of COVID, they fell in love with a house outside the city and made the move.

Still, Point Breeze left its mark.

For Sarah, what makes the neighborhood special is the mix of longtime and newer residents who become neighbors, and often friends. It's the kind of place built around everyday interactions and familiar faces.

And for anyone who does find themselves exploring the neighborhood, Sarah has one more stop to add to the list: the Keith Haring mural at 22nd and Ellsworth.

Because Point Breeze may not always announce itself.

Sometimes, you have to live there to really know it.
