There’s something about Roxborough and Manayunk that feels different from the rest of Philadelphia.
Maybe it’s the way Manayunk seems to climb straight up the hillside, with narrow streets, old rowhomes, and glimpses of the river below. Or maybe it’s the way Roxborough opens up just beyond it, trading some of that bustle for tree lined streets, stone homes, backyards, and unexpected pockets of quiet.
Together, the two neighborhoods offer a little bit of everything. Energy when you want it. Space when you need it. Coffee shops, neighborhood restaurants, trails, old architecture, and enough hills to make you reconsider whether walking somewhere was really such a good idea.
They don’t necessarily demand your attention. They have a way of earning it.
And for Philly Home Collective’s Mark Taubman, who has called East Falls, Manayunk, and now Roxborough home, this corner of Northwest Philadelphia has become one of his favorite parts of the city.
A Neighborhood Shaped by the River
Long before Main Street was lined with restaurants and shops, Manayunk was an industrial powerhouse.
Originally known as Flat Rock, the neighborhood was renamed Manayunk in 1824, taking its name from a Lenape word associated with the Schuylkill River and commonly translated as “place to drink.”
The Manayunk Canal helped turn the neighborhood into a major manufacturing center filled with textile mills and factories, and traces of that history are still everywhere.
Old mill buildings hug the river. Brick storefronts line Main Street. The canal quietly winds behind the commercial corridor, while old locks, industrial buildings, and rail infrastructure offer reminders of the neighborhood that came before.
Today, much of that history has been adapted rather than erased. Former mills have found new lives, while the Towpath and Schuylkill River Trail have turned the riverfront into one of the neighborhood’s best places to wander.
Roxborough developed a little differently. As industry grew below, the hills above became home to larger residences, stone houses, Victorian twins, and quieter residential streets.
The neighborhoods grew side by side, but each developed its own distinct personality.
Hills, Houses, and a Whole Lot of Character
Manayunk doesn’t ease you into its topography.
The streets climb. And climb. And occasionally make you wonder who approved this.
Homes seem tucked into every available piece of hillside, creating a landscape of brick rowhomes, Victorian details, old stone, and converted industrial spaces. From certain blocks, you can look across rooftops toward the river and almost forget you’re still inside Philadelphia.
Roxborough gives you a little more breathing room.
There are classic rowhomes here too, but also stone twins, detached houses, porches, yards, and streets shaded by mature trees. Wander away from Ridge Avenue and parts of the neighborhood can feel more like a small town tucked inside the city.
That mix is part of the appeal. You can spend Saturday afternoon walking Main Street and Sunday morning drinking coffee on your porch.
The Best of Both Worlds
Living here means you don’t necessarily have to choose between city life and a little extra space.
Main Street gives Manayunk a true town center, with restaurants, coffee shops, bars, boutiques, fitness studios, and businesses you can wander into without much of a plan.
Just behind it, the Manayunk Canal Towpath offers something completely different. Slip onto the trail and the storefronts quickly give way to water, trees, old industrial buildings, and the kind of quiet you don’t expect to find just steps from Main Street.
Keep going and you connect with the larger Schuylkill River Trail.
Then there’s Roxborough, where the pace shifts just enough. There are busy commercial stretches and plenty of neighborhood businesses, but there are also residential streets where things become wonderfully uneventful.
It’s urban and a little suburban. Lively and laid back. Connected without feeling like you’re right in the middle of everything.
For Mark, who has lived throughout this pocket of Northwest Philly, that balance is a big part of what makes it work.

Of course, knowing a neighborhood also means knowing where to go. These are a few of Mark’s regular stops and favorite ways to spend time around Roxborough and Manayunk.
Taqueria Amor
For an easy neighborhood meal, Taqueria Amor is one of Mark’s reliable Main Street stops. Colorful, casual, and perfect when tacos and margaritas are calling.
Blondie
When Sunday calls for cocktails with friends, Blondie fits the bill. Right in the middle of Main Street, it’s the kind of spot that works just as well for brunch as it does for drinks that accidentally turn into dinner.
Gary Mann Jewelers
A longtime neighborhood staple, Gary Mann Jewelers is Mark’s pick for estate jewelry and unique pieces you’re unlikely to stumble across at a typical jewelry counter.
Volo Coffeehouse
For espresso and a little people watching, Mark heads to Volo Coffeehouse. Grab a coffee, find a spot near the window, and watch Main Street do its thing.
The Manayunk Towpath
One of the neighborhood’s best surprises is hiding just behind Main Street.
The Manayunk Towpath follows the historic canal and connects with the Schuylkill River Trail, offering a peaceful stretch of water, greenery, industrial history, and just enough separation from the activity nearby.
It’s also the kind of place that makes Manayunk suddenly feel less like Philadelphia and more like a little river town somewhere much farther away.
The Manayunk Arts Festival
And then there’s the Manayunk Arts Festival, when Main Street closes to traffic and fills with artists, makers, and visitors for one of the neighborhood’s biggest weekends of the year.
It’s a fitting event for a place that has always managed to blend its industrial roots with a distinctly creative streak.
Find Your Own Corner
Maybe what makes Roxborough and Manayunk work so well together is that neither can really be reduced to one thing.
There’s Main Street energy and quiet residential blocks. Historic rowhomes and old mills. River trails and steep hills. Restaurants and shops within walking distance, then porches and backyards just a few minutes away.
Spend enough time here and chances are you’ll find your own favorite corner.
A coffee shop you keep returning to. A stretch of Towpath you didn’t know existed. A view from the top of a hill that makes the climb worth it.
That’s the rhythm of Roxborough and Manayunk.
You just have to wander around long enough to find yours.
