For Allie, Karl, Stella, and their two cats, Nala and Dirt, home is all about warmth, history, and the kind of neighborhood rhythm that makes daily life feel rooted.
Their Fairmount home blends character and calm in a way that feels both collected and intentional. A Buzzfeed quiz once described their style as “Modern Traditional with Scandinavian and Mid-Century Influences,” but really, their approach has been much more personal than that. They’ve filled the house with pieces they love, always with the goal of making it feel warm, peaceful, and true to the home’s original character.
“We wanted a home with history and personality, but that still felt current,” they shared.
That balance shows throughout the house. Since moving in, Allie and Karl have taken on thoughtful updates that honor the home while making it their own. The kitchen and primary bath have been completely renovated, the first-floor wood floors have been refinished, the stained glass doors and transom window have been restored, the back patio has fresh cement and fencing, and the roof has been redone.
Their favorite room is the living room, where they spend most of their time together. A large front window lets in beautiful natural light, and in the spring, it perfectly frames the cherry blossoms just outside.
It’s also a home made for gathering. One of their favorite memories was hosting a prohibition-era murder mystery party, complete with flapper dresses, speakeasy cocktails, and a secret entrance through the back alleyway.
“This is a great house for entertaining,” they said.
But some of the best moments have been much simpler: happy hour on the front stoop, chatting with neighbors.
That sense of connection is exactly what they love about Fairmount. It’s the kind of neighborhood where people know each other, rowhomes have flower boxes out front, and parks and coffee shops are part of the everyday routine. A perfect day starts with Vietnamese iced coffee from Brown Street Coffee and ends with a stroll through Corinthian Gardens or a beer at Hilltown.
When asked what they love most about Philly culture, their answer was simple: the people.
“They seem to have gritty exteriors but kind hearts,” they said. “And Karl has really come to love hating on the PPA!”
At 2521 Brown Street, home is historic, welcoming, full of personality, and deeply connected to the neighborhood around it. It’s a place where old details have been lovingly restored, new memories have been made, and the front stoop is always part of the story.
