For Caroline Bean, vintage collecting isn't just about decorating a home—it's about giving beautiful things a second life.
Named after the street where she spends time in Bethany Beach, Delaware, Maplewood Street Vintage & Home reflects Caroline's love of coastal living and the thrill of discovering treasures hidden in plain sight. Through her Etsy shop, she rescues carefully chosen pieces from estate sales, thrift stores, and antique malls, connecting them with people who will love them for years to come.
How did you get started?
I've always loved vintage, but there was only so much I could fit in my own house. One day, I found a hand-carved wooden duck decoy at a thrift store and simply couldn't leave it behind. I felt like it deserved another chance with someone who would appreciate it. That's really when Maplewood Street Vintage & Home was born.
What excites and energizes you most about your work?
Finding that just-right piece gives me such a rush. Who would have thought a burnt bamboo tissue box could bring so much joy? And hearing that little "cha-ching" from Etsy when someone else falls in love with something I found never gets old. I'm certainly not getting rich doing this, but it brings me so much happiness.
Do you have a favorite memory since you've started?
Finding six gorgeous oyster plates in perfect condition and not being able to believe my eyes. Vintage lovers know exactly what I'm talking about. #IYKYK
What makes your workspace feel like your own?
I wish the packing supplies were as lovely as the vintage treasures lining my shelves. My family has been incredibly patient with the endless bubble wrap and boxes that seem to multiply faster than I can contain them.
Where do you find inspiration?
I absolutely love wandering the tiny streets of Philadelphia, especially Addison Street, and admiring the historic facades. People care so deeply for their homes, and I love seeing architectural details preserved and appreciated.
What keeps you coming back to the hunt?
There's something special about rescuing quality pieces that might otherwise end up in a landfill and putting them into the hands of someone who truly appreciates them. Every piece has a story, and I love being a small part of giving it a new chapter.
