My business is located on Broad St in the heart of South Philadelphia.
What is your business and who are your customers?
A boxing and fitness gym. My clients are everyday individuals who are looking to learn the fundamentals of boxing for exercise and self-defense.
How did you get started in this business?
I used boxing as a form of exercise for myself and I just ended up falling in love with it. The gym I was training out of at the time was looking for new trainers to help teach the classes there. They asked me if I wanted to do it with no coaching experience before. I said yes and the rest is history!
I chose the location because it’s right in the neighborhood I grew up in. There aren’t a-lot of boxing gyms around here and knew I could make it grow into something special.
Seeing how my clients grow with confidence every time they complete a session. Everyone has a bad day but they always come back eager to correct it and continue to grow and learn.
Just the overwhelming amount of support I received from old clients and new. Watching people strive and grow in the gym is a daily favorite memory for me.
Probably my picture and posters I have on the walls. I’ve worked out of two other gyms prior to this. You walk in my gym and people know “this is definitely Enzo’s gym”. Being able to make a place my own and have my own touch to it was really nice for me.
Good question! There are so many songs that fire me up in the gym. Whether I’m training my clients or training myself. There are too many to choose from!
Other boxing gyms, surrounding myself with other coaches and peers. I love being a student of this game. The amount of knowledge you’re able to absorb by being around talented and dedicated coaches and fighters is inspiring.
The diversity of the city. I see so many different types of people day in and day out. I love hearing people's stories and backgrounds and just knowing as much as I can about them as a person.
Almost impossible question to answer! I love food way too much. If I had to say one place, I’d say my favorite meal is at Palizzi Club. The food is amazing every time and the people who work and operate the place are even better. They make me feel like family every time I walk in the door.
I probably wanted to be 1000 different things when I was younger and none of them involved boxing or coaching. I was so against working out as a whole until I was about 22-23 years old. It astonishes me every day that I am now in the position I am in. If you told me 10 years ago that this is what I’d be doing I would have said you were crazy!
There are a few. My first trainer and mentor Maleek Jackson has an autobiography that tells his story and was very inspiring. Another book is called “Going Right” by Logan Gelbrich.
A clear head and mental state. I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older that making decisions off of reactions or emotions usually doesn’t fare well for me. Having peace of mind as an adult and business owner has really helped me make smart conscious decisions.
Of course!!! I am a believer in keeping it quiet until it comes to fruition just in case it doesn’t happen.
