There’s a point every fall when the first cool morning hits, the leaves start turning, and suddenly staying home on a Saturday feels like a missed opportunity. You want a coffee in your hand, a sweater you probably didn’t need by noon, and somewhere pretty to wander without much of an agenda.
Luckily, you don’t have to go far.
From cobblestone streets in Northwest Philly to leafy college towns and postcard-worthy main streets just across the bridge, some of the best places to lean all the way into fall are within easy reach of the city. Here are five of our favorite places to spend a crisp autumn day.
Chestnut Hill: For the Full Fall Experience
If fall were a Philadelphia neighborhood, it might be Chestnut Hill.
Start on Germantown Avenue, where historic architecture, mature trees and independent shops make wandering the point. The business district stretches for blocks, filled with boutiques, galleries, cafés and restaurants, so it’s easy to spend an afternoon popping in and out without making much of a plan. Then trade the Avenue for the trees. Chestnut Hill sits alongside Wissahickon Valley Park, making it especially easy to pair a morning of coffee and shopping with an afternoon walk under the changing leaves. The fall mood: cobblestones, old stone houses, trail walks and the strong possibility that you’ll start looking at real estate before you leave.
Media: For an Afternoon With No Agenda
Media is one of those places that invites you to slow down.
State Street is the center of it all—a walkable downtown where you can grab lunch, browse locally owned shops, stop for something sweet and keep wandering until dinner suddenly feels like a reasonable idea.
Come October, the whole thing gets even more seasonal. Media’s State Street Fall Festival takes over downtown on October 4 this year, with merchants spilling into the street for a full-on autumn day in “Everybody’s Hometown.” (Visit Media PA)
But you don’t really need an event as an excuse to go. The appeal is simply spending a few hours somewhere where you can park the car and forget about it.
The fall mood: Main Street energy, lunch that turns into drinks, and nowhere you particularly need to be.
Swarthmore: For Quiet, Leafy Fall
A few minutes down the road, Swarthmore offers a completely different pace.
The borough has that quintessential college-town feeling in the fall: tree-lined streets, beautiful old homes and the leafy campus of Swarthmore College woven right into town. It’s quieter than some of the other stops on this list, which is exactly the appeal.
Saturday morning is an especially good time to visit. The Swarthmore Farmers Market runs from 9 a.m. to noon through November 21 this year, bringing local growers, food makers, artists and neighbors together right in the center of town. (Swarthmore Town Center)
Pick up something good at the market, wander through town and then take the long way back to the car.
The fall mood: farmers market tote bag, crunchy leaves and absolutely no reason to rush.
Haddonfield: For the Movie-Version of Fall
Cross the bridge into South Jersey and Haddonfield delivers an almost suspicious amount of small-town charm.
Historic buildings, tree-lined streets and brick sidewalks surround a compact downtown centered on Kings Highway. More than 200 independent boutiques, galleries, cafés and restaurants are tucked into the downtown district, so it’s built for wandering. (Mysite)
There’s history everywhere, but Haddonfield doesn’t feel preserved behind glass. It feels lived in—people walking dogs, grabbing coffee, shopping, meeting friends and lingering outside when the weather cooperates.
And if no one feels like driving, PATCO drops you right at the edge of the historic downtown. (PATCO)

Ambler: For a Fall Day That Turns Into a Night Out
Ambler is our pick when you want the charm of a small downtown but aren’t ready to head home once the sun goes down.
Butler Avenue is the heart of town, with independent shops, restaurants and arts and entertainment all packed into a walkable downtown. The Ambler Theater and Act II Playhouse give you a built-in excuse to turn an afternoon visit into dinner and a show. (Ambler Main Street)

Sometimes the Best Fall Getaway Is Closer Than You Think
You don’t need a cabin in the Poconos—or even a full weekend—to get out of your routine for a little while.
Sometimes all it takes is twenty or thirty miles, a road lined with changing leaves and a town you haven’t wandered through lately.
